Students will be engaged in fun and creative engineering design and problem solving as they construct a simple bottle rocket from soft drink bottles, cardboard, and other materials. The rocket is powered by air pressure and water. We will discuss concepts like Newton’s Laws of Motion, thrust, center of mass, and aerodynamics as students attempt to build a rocket that flies straight and has a working parachute. In the last part of the session, we will walk to a park to launch our rockets!

As part of the day, we will watch the movie October Sky, a true story about a group of young boys in the 1950’s who design and build rockets while living in a small coal mining town in West Virginia.

Pizza lunch will be provided. Students may bring their own lunch if they prefer.
