Downtown Discovery Camp: The GoldCap Adventure Week

Get ready for a week of movement, exploration, creativity, and real-world adventure in the heart of downtown Iowa City. Our Downtown Discovery Camp is a signature GoldCap experience—designed to get kids out in the community, working as teams, building confidence, and having an absolute blast along the way.

Each day is built around a mix of missions, challenges, and team-based exploration, giving campers a sense of ownership in their experience. Whether they’re navigating downtown, solving clues, or deciding their next move, kids aren’t just participating—they’re leading, creating, and discovering.

The “Where’s Rusty?” Downtown Challenge

Our classic Rusty hunt returns—with a twist. Campers will visit local businesses throughout the week, searching for Rusty while completing mini-challenges at each stop. From solving clues to quick team tasks and photo challenges, each location becomes part of a bigger mission. Teams will earn points throughout the week, building toward a fun end-of-camp finale.

Scavenger Hunts & Downtown Missions

From the Ped Mall to the Iowa City Public Library, campers will take on a variety of interactive scavenger hunts and team challenges. Some will test their creativity, others their problem-solving, and all are designed to get kids moving, thinking, and working together.

We’ll even mix things up with special twists like reverse scavenger hunts and clue-based challenges that keep kids engaged and on their toes.

Mini Duck Hunts (with a Competitive Edge)

A GoldCap favorite—leveled up. Duck hunts will include hidden clues, team strategy, and even a special “Golden Duck” challenge. These fast-paced games bring energy, excitement, and just the right amount of friendly competition.

City Bus Adventures

One of the most unique parts of the week—campers will learn how to navigate the city bus system and head out on a mystery destination adventure. Along the way, they’ll help read routes, decide when to get off, and explore new parks and nearby spots.

It’s hands-on, real-world learning wrapped in a fun and memorable experience.

Parks, Greenspaces & Outdoor Play

Each day includes time to recharge and play in local parks and greenspaces. Expect a mix of group games, free play, and outdoor challenges that keep kids active and engaged while giving them space to just be kids.

Creative & Chill Time

We balance the high-energy moments with creative time built for connection and expression:

• Sidewalk chalk art challenges on the Ped Mall
• Nature journaling and sketching in the park
• Collaborative design challenges like “create your own downtown shop”

These moments give kids a chance to slow down, reflect, and show off their creativity.

Downtown Photo Challenge

Throughout the week, teams will complete a themed photo challenge—capturing everything from “Most Iowa City” to “Funniest Moment.” At the end of the week, we’ll celebrate with a mini showcase of their best shots.

Local Favorites & Exploration Stops

No GoldCap camp is complete without a few iconic stops. Campers will enjoy visits to:

• Yotopia for a refreshing treat
• Sweets & Treats for a behind-the-scenes style experience
• The University of Iowa Natural History Museum
• The Stanley Museum of Art for a quick, engaging visit

Real-World Skills (Built In Naturally)

Throughout the week, campers will build confidence and independence by practicing real-life skills in a natural, supportive way:

• Navigating downtown safely
• Interacting with local businesses
• Reading maps and making decisions as a group

We don’t over-teach it—but it’s always happening.

End-of-Week Amazing Race Finale

We wrap up the week with a full-scale Downtown Amazing Race—a team-based challenge that brings everything together. Clues, bus routes, duck hunts, photo tasks, and problem-solving all combine into one unforgettable final adventure.
